Who this is for: A marketer or founder with a webinar, interview or training recording they own. You will end with: one short clip that makes sense to someone who never saw the original.
Before you begin
- A recording you own or have permission to edit (OpusClip accepts links from YouTube, Zoom, Google Drive, Vimeo and more, if public or unlisted, or an uploaded file).
- A list of names and terms that must be spelled correctly in captions.
- The destination format you need, usually vertical 9:16 for short-video feeds.
- No private customer or meeting information in the source.
Sample input
Recording: a 30-minute training video you own about answering customer questions.
Idea to find: “Ask what the customer needs before recommending software.”
Audience: small business operators.
Desired result: one self-contained answer, 30 to 90 seconds, with no claims the speaker did not make.
Steps
Choose a focused source
Pick the section of the recording with one clear point. Paste the link or upload the file. A 30-minute source uses about 30 credits.
Checkpoint: the right recording, and you have permission to use it.
Set clip length before you submit
OpusClip’s help center says Clip Length defaults to Auto (0 to 3 minutes) and a prompt cannot control length, so set it first. Prompt-to-clip is listed on Pro; if you have it, say what you want (“moments with practical advice”), not what you do not want.

Review every candidate clip
Watch each clip from start to end. Reject clips that start mid-thought, drop a needed qualification, or change what the speaker meant.

Check captions and framing
Verify names, numbers and line breaks. Apply a caption brand template if you set one up. Editing captions needs a paid plan; on Free, choose another clip instead.
Original diagram of step 3, not a screenshot of the product. Checkpoint: important words are readable and the crop keeps the speaker in frame.
Export within 3 days and inspect the file
On the Free plan clips stop being exportable after 3 days. Download, then open the file and check video, audio, captions and the watermark before you post.

What should you have at the end?
A short file that makes one point with enough context. Length and style depend on your source and settings; we do not show a sample output because we did not produce one.
What if something goes wrong?
- No useful candidates
- Use a shorter, more focused source section.
- Captions are wrong
- Fix them on a paid plan, or pick a clip with fewer names and numbers.
- Cannot export
- Check whether 3 days have passed (Free) and your remaining credits.
- Bad crop
- Try a different clip or reframe in a paid plan’s editor.
- High score, weak clip
- Ignore the score and judge clarity yourself.
Quick verdict
Useful when you already have spoken video and want help finding candidate clips. The free plan is enough to learn the workflow, but it adds a watermark, has no editor, and clips can only be exported for 3 days. Judge every clip yourself; a vendor score is not a prediction of how it will perform.
Best for
- Turning existing long recordings into short vertical clips
- Teams that want captions and reframing done automatically
Avoid if
- You need detailed manual editing on a free plan
- You do not own or have permission to edit the recording
Product details, plans and pricing
The how-to comes first. Below are the product facts, plan limits and prices, taken from official vendor pages. Each fact shows the date it was checked; vendors change plans, so confirm on the official page before you buy.
What is free, and what are the limits?
| Plan | Access type | Key limits (official pricing page) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Renewing free plan | 60 credits a month; watermark; no editing; clips exportable for 3 days |
| Pro trial | Trial | New users get a 7-day Pro trial that becomes the Free plan when it ends (help center) |
| Starter | Paid | $15/month, monthly billing only; 150 credits a month; no watermark; editor |
| Pro | Paid | $29/month billed monthly, or $14.50/month billed yearly ($174/year); 300 credits a month |
OpusClip’s help center says processing uses 1 credit per minute of the original video, so a 60-minute webinar uses the whole free monthly allowance. Free plan checked Oct 21, 2026; paid prices checked Oct 20, 2026.
Which plan do you need?
Stay on Free while you learn. Move to Starter ($15/month) when you need the editor or a watermark-free export; Pro when you need prompt-to-clip, a team workspace or more credits. Count your monthly recording minutes first: that number decides the plan.
Alternatives
- Descript: edit the video by editing its transcript; better when you want manual control. See OpusClip vs Descript.
- HeyGen and Synthesia create new avatar videos rather than clipping existing ones.
